Advice re Pandemic Flu  Updated 10.8.10

The National Pandemic Flu Service is being stood down from 11th February 2010 at 1am, as there appears to be a decrease in cases.  If you do have symptoms of flu please ring the surgery in the first instance and we will arrange for a GP to call you back.

If you didn't get vaccinated last year, you can do so this year - please ask at reception for details, as these will be in set clinics, as we need to immunise in batches as each vial provides enough vaccine for ten people and once opened has to be destroyed after 12 hours.  These vaccinations will be offered to those in the at risk groups and again pregnant ladies, who havent already been previously immunised.

Please DO NOT come into the surgery, unless specifically requested to do so by a GP - even then you must ring the doorbell, and wait for a member of staff to come and give you a mask, which must be worn.   You must wait in your car until the GP is ready to see you.

Flu Symptoms are as follows:

  • High temperature (38C or over) plus two or more of the following
  • Cough
  • Excessive tiredness
  • Chills
  • Headache
  • Loss of appetite
  • Severe nasal congestion
  • Muscle aches and pains
  • Sore throat
  • Vomiting and diarrhoea

All patients with any flu like symptoms should follow the following advice:

  • Avoid contact with other people as much as possible
  • Cover your nose /mouth when sneezing or coughing - use a tissue and dispose of promptly and carefully
  • Maintain good hygiene by washing hands frequently with soap and water to reduce the spread of virus
  • Clean hard surfaces (eg door handles) frequently with normal cleaning products
  • Make sure that your children follow this advice

For routine enquires about swine flu please ring NHS Direct on 0845 4647 as this will help reduce the volume of calls that the surgery is having to deal with .

Please note that we may have to make alterations to our routine appointments should we encounter another wave of the flu virus.
